Housing security refers to the stability and safety of individuals and families in the context of their living situations. It encompasses a number of different factors, including not just the physical safety of the housing structure but also the assurance that residents can stay in their homes without fear of eviction, displacement, or being driven out due to affordability issues.
Housing security is a major crisis in US cities nationwide at the moment—and Bloomington is no different in being affected by this challenging macroeconomic trend. However, the City of Bloomington is strongly committed to improving housing security and ensuring all Bloomington residents feel safe and secure in their homes.
The City sponsors a number of different initiatives through its Housing and Neighborhood Development (HAND) Department to increase housing security:
Affordable Housing → The City ensures that a certain amount of affordable housing is available at all times to residents and works with developers to build and maintain these affordable homes.
Housing Ownership Programs → A number of Bloomington-sponsored programs are available for prospective homeowners to assist with the purchasing and financing process.
Rental Assistance and Eviction Resources → Bloomington partners with a variety of community-based organizations to help tenants who are experiencing difficulties paying rent or are facing eviction.
Goal HS 2. Prepare Bloomington for climate risks and impacts.
Adaptation & Resilience
Housing security is a major pillar of resilience, ensuring that all Bloomington residents have access to a safe and affordable place to live. Often, those facing the most housing insecurity are also the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change—exacerbating the importance of housing security.
