Sustainability planners for cities like Bloomington tend to think about climate change through either a mitigation or a resilience/adaptation lens. Mitigation strategies aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, transitioning towards sustainable energy sources and improving energy efficiencies, thus tackling the problem at its source. Conversely, adaptation measures are implemented to enhance the resilience of our community against the inevitable changes brought about by a shifting climate, such as extreme weather patterns and rising temperatures.
To bolster the City’s efforts toward achieving climate adaptation and resilience, the City conducted a detailed Climate Vulnerability Assessment in 2020. City staff continually engage in ongoing efforts to understand the challenges posed by climate change and to respond accordingly.
The City is currently developing a Climate Resilience Plan to address the risks and vulnerabilities highlighted in the 2020 Climate Action Plan. This plan is anticipated to completed and released to the public in 2024.
Goal HS 1. Educate, engage, and empower the public for climate health and safety.
Adaptation & Resilience
Addressing climate vulnerabilities enhances Bloomington's ability to endure and swiftly bounce back from environmental disturbances. This resilience translates into stronger, more adaptable infrastructure and public services, poised for the challenges of a changing climate.
Preventative Public Health
Planning for climate risks leads to improved air quality and reduced exposure to extreme weather events, contributing to overall public health benefits. Proactive measures also curb the spread of climate-related diseases, alleviating future healthcare demands.
